A collection account on your credit report can drop your score by 50-100 points and stay there for up to 6 years in Canada. But not every collection has to stay. Here is the full picture on what can be done.
How Long Do Collections Stay on Your Report?
In Canada, most negative credit information, including collections, remains on your credit report for 6 years from the date of last activity. This is different from the US, where the period is 7 years.
The 6-year clock starts from the date of last activity on the account, which is typically when you last made a payment or when the account was first sent to collections.
Collections That Can Be Removed
Not all collections are permanent. Collections that may be removable include: collections with inaccurate information (wrong amount, wrong date, wrong creditor name), collections on debt that was already paid but still shows as outstanding, collections on debt that wasn't yours, duplicate collection entries for the same debt, and collections past the 6-year reporting period.
The Dispute Process
You can dispute collections directly with Equifax and TransUnion by mail or online. When you dispute, the bureau contacts the collection agency to verify the debt. If the agency cannot verify the details or does not respond within the required timeframe, the bureau must remove the item.
This is why professional credit repair can help. We know which details to challenge and how to structure disputes to maximize the likelihood of removal.
Pay for Delete
In some cases, you can negotiate with a collection agency to remove the collection entry in exchange for payment. This is sometimes called a "pay for delete" arrangement. Canadian collection agencies are not required to agree to this, but many will, especially for older debts.
Get any agreement in writing before you pay. An agency that agrees verbally and then fails to remove the entry after payment has taken your money with no recourse.
What Cannot Be Removed
Accurate collections that are within the 6-year reporting period and where the creditor verifies the information when challenged will typically stay. No legitimate process can remove these.
US Collections on Canadian Reports
If you previously lived in the US and have US collections appearing on your Canadian credit report, these are often disputable because US collections agencies are typically not registered to report to Canadian bureaus. This is a common situation we see with newcomers who moved to Canada.
